Solinst offers three different versions of a Flat Tape Water Level Meter, each with unique features and benefits. So, how do you choose the one that’s right for you?
What are the differences?
Below is a brief description of each of the three Flat Tape Water Level Meters. Note that the major differences are seen in their tapes and probes.
Water Level Meter | Tape | Probe |

Which one is for you?
Sorting through specifications to make the best selection, can be simplified by answering a few basic questions.
To what depths are you measuring?
Simply put, if you are measuring beyond 1000 ft. (300 m), you need a Model 101 P7. The Model 101 P7 comes in lengths up to 5000 ft. (1500 m). The PVDF tape is higher in electrical efficiency, and is therefore better for longer lengths of tape. Solinst offers Power Reels and the 101 Power Winder to provide more effortless winding of longer tape lengths.
Note: Solinst also offers the Model 104 Sonic Water Level Meter that can measure down to 2000 ft. (600 m).
Do you require extremely accurate measurements?
Solinst recommends using the Model 101 P7. The PVDF tape is accurately laser marked (certified traceable to national standards) and is high in tensile strength, making it non-stretch and ensuring accuracy over the long-term. In addition, the P7 Probe has a zero point closer to the tip; as such, there is almost zero displacement when the probe enters the water.
Are you looking to minimize costs?
The Model 101B is very affordable. Just remember you are limited in length options, the tape markings are less frequent, and there is no on/off/sensitivity dial. However, the 101B is built to be robust, and with fewer components that may need repair in the future, costs are kept down for the lifetime of the 101B.
Are you measuring in potentially corrosive/contaminated groundwater?
All three Flat Tape Water Level Meters feature a corrosion-proof 316 stainless steel probe, so all work for depth to water level measurements. However, the Model 101 P7 uses PVDF flat tape, which is more chemical and corrosion resistant. It is also less likely to stain, and is easy to clean and decontaminate. Therefore, if there is a chance that your flat tape will be exposed to the groundwater, the 101 P7 is the best option.
Note: Another good option is the Model 104 Sonic Water Level Meter. Since it uses sound waves from the surface to detect static water level, nothing is lowered down the well – no need for decontamination.
Will you be measuring in environments with varying conductivities?
If so, you will need either a Model 101 P2 or P7 Water Level Meter. These Meters have an on/off/sensitivity dial. The sensitivity dial can be turned up or down depending on the conductivity of the groundwater you are measuring (you can also use this dial to turn down the sensitivity in cascading water).
Are you looking for a Flat Tape Water Level Meter to add to your rental pool, or your company’s fleet? All three are good options!
The Model 101B is very affordable, rugged, and anyone can use it – it’s foolproof.
The Model 101 P2 has been used in the industry for years; it’s recognizable and reliable. The P2 Probe is very easy to repair if clients are using the Meter in rugged conditions.
The Model 101 P7 has a unique feature – the PVDF flat tape and probe seal. The replacement Solinst PVDF flat tape with probe seal is interchangeable between Solinst Model 101 P7 Water Level Meters, Model 107 TLC (Temperature, Level, Conductivity) Meters, and the Standard Model 122 Interface Meters. This means you can have one replacement part handy for three different instruments.
Do you need to monitor drawdown?
The Model 101D Water Level DrawDown Meter has all the same features as the Model 101 P7 Water Level Meter (tape, probe, sensitivity switch, ec.), with the added benefit of a drawdown detection mode.
Are you measuring in narrow diameter applications?
Maybe you actually need a Model 102 Narrow Diameter Cable Water Level Indicator. To learn more about the Model 102 Water Level Indicator, check out our recent blog post about the release of the new Model 102 Water Level Indicator Probes.
Note: For wells where the water level is even harder to access due to tubing, wiring or other instruments in the well, the Model 104 Sonic Water Level Meter provides depth to static water level readings without lowering anything down the well!
