Sampling Groundwater Using Water Flute
Sampling Groundwater Using Water Flute
After the Water Flute is installed, the formation water will flow from the formation into the screen, sample port, and up the tubing on the inside of the liner. The water then flows up through the first check valve and up both legs of the “U” tubing (pump tube and sample tube) to a height equal to the head of the formation.
The water level can then be measured in the pump tube from the surface with a water level meter. Visit our website to view the sampling procedure. To purge and sample the Water Flute, gas pressure is applied to the pump tubes. Once the pressure is applied, the first check valve closes, and the pressure forces the water to flow through the second check valve and to the surface through the sample tube.
The process is repeated multiple times to purge the system and then collect samples. All intervals can be sampled and purged simultaneously. Sample and purge volumes are large, generally 1 gallon per stroke.
The Water Flute is excellent for VOC sampling as there is no aerating of the sample.
For shallow systems, a Peristaltic Pump may also be used to obtain groundwater samples. Contact Solinst Flute for more details.
High quality discrete groundwater samples are collected directly from the formation, as the Water Flute system is fully dilated against the borehole wall.

Groundwater Monitoring Within Narrow Diameters
Peristaltic Pump, Model 410
The Peristaltic Pump uses the suction lift principle to sample groundwater. Suitable for 1/4″ (6 mm) ID or larger diameters. The Peristaltic Pump provides a regulated and steady flow. It will lift water up to 32 ft. (10 m) at sea level.
Narrow Cable Water Level Meters, Model 102
Water levels can be measured in the Water Flute pump tubes using a Model 102 or 102M Mini Laser Marked Cable Water Level Meter with a P4 (4 mm) probe.
Tag Line, Model 103
A Solinst Model 103 Tag Line is handy for tagging depths during borehole and liner installations. Padding the Tag Line is required for use inside a Water Flute liner.
Warranty, Removability, Repairability
The Water Flute system is fully warrantied and removable for other use of the borehole or easy abandonment by grouting the borehole.
The systems are easily removed from a borehole, if they are installed with water inside the liner.
The Solinst Water Flute is also reusable and repairable.
